While this might seem critical, its Looney Tunes-like elements surprisingly enhance the experience. In the initial hour, director Doug Liman, along with Anthony Bagarozzi & Charles Mondry, craft a delightful B-movie vibe that captivates.
However, as the film transitions into a more serious tone, it falters, weighed down by absurd plot twists, stilted dialogue, and subpar CGI in fight scenes. Amidst the chaos, Jake Gyllenhaal shines with a dynamic performance, oscillating between charm and menace. Yet, his efforts are overshadowed by a film that loses its footing, devolving into something reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons.
